Why
Collect Glass?
It's
heavy and chemically inert and has many uses right here in Sitka when crushed into
coarse sand. Why pay to ship glass South?
When
and Where Do We Collect Glass?
At
the Marine Services Center on Katlian Street, near Thomsen Harbor. SEVEN DAYS A WEEK!
At
Lakeside and Sea Market Parking
Lots
8am-6pm SEVEN DAYS A WEEK!
At
the Solid Waste Transfer Station on Jarvis St. 8am-4pm Monday through Saturday
What
Glass Do We Collect?
Bottles
and Jars
Food containers
Broken glass, window panes
Ceramic items -- including dinnerware, coffee cups, etc.
Please rinse out bottles and jars. Labels may be left on. Remove
lids and discard. The small retaining ring from screw caps may
be left on. Glass may be damp, but should not have standing
water inside.
DO
NOT DROP OFF:
Porcelain
(toilets, sinks, etc.)
Windshields
Light Bulbs (contain mercury)
Mirrors ( lead backing)
OTHER:
No plastic bags, paper bags, boxes or other items should go
into the glass containers. Glass should be free of food waste
and standing water.
Please remove the steel cloers on some beverage bottles or any
plastic that is floating around inside the bottle.
Where
Does Your Recycled Glass Go?
All glass collected will be stored at the Sawmill Cove Transfer
Station and will be crushed by the city on a regular basis.,
using the new glass crushing machine. Plans are to use the first
glass for city construction projects. The crush glass is also
available to the public and to non-profit organizations by request.
